SUMMARY: Under the direct supervision of the Electrical/I&C Supervisor, the Electric & Instrument Technician maintains and repairs all electrical and instrumentation control systems within the power plant.

ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES: Includes the following; other duties may be assigned. Completes maintenance requests and preventative maintenance tasks as assigned. Informs supervisor of needed spare parts and tools to complete job assignment. Calibrates both electronic and pneumatic instruments within design specifications. Tunes control loops within proper parameters to ensure optimum operation. Maintains, repairs, installs and troubleshoots up to 4,160 volts of electrical equipment, including: conduit, wiring, electric motors, switchgear, plant lighting and motor operated valves. Assists in instruction of other Electric & Instrument Technicians or apprentices. Troubleshoots instruments and test equipment to component level. Maintains Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) required equipment and completes required records. Assists department engineers and Generation Engineering department in problem investigations and projects. Performs modifications and new installations of electrical & instrument systems. Uses computers to work with plant control systems, plant programmable controllers, maintenance management system and other computer-based systems. Attends on and off-site safety and technical training as requested or required.

QUALIFICATIONS: To perform this job successfully, an individual must be able to perform each essential duty satisfactorily. The requirements listed below are representative of the education, experience, knowledge, skills, abilities and behaviors required of this position.

Education and Experience: Requires successful completion of a recognized two (2) year technical school program, including Associate Degree in electrical/industrial electricity/instrumentation. Military technical school training, directly related vocational technical programs, or completion of a formal electrical/instrument apprenticeship may also be partially or fully qualifying. In addition, two (2) years of directly related experience in a power plant, industrial, chemical industry or heavy industry environment is also required. Years of experience in a power plant electrical and instrument role can be substituted for education at the rate of two (2) years of related experience for one (1) year of education.

Language Skills: Ability to read and interpret documents such as safety rules, operating and maintenance instructions, and procedure manuals. Ability to write routine reports and correspondence. Ability to speak effectively with other employees.

Math Skills: Ability to add, subtract, multiply, and divide in all units of measure, using whole numbers, common fractions, and decimals. Ability to compute rate, ratio, and percent and to draw and interpret bar graphs, and perform basic algebra. 

Reasoning Ability: Ability to apply common sense understanding to carry out instructions furnished in written, oral, or diagram form. Ability to deal with problems involving several concrete variables in standardized situations.

Computer Skills: Ability to use a personal computer and Microsoft Office to research and configure controls systems, and to work in the Maintenance Management System and plant emission system as required.

CERTIFICATES, LICENSES, REGISTRATIONS: This position requires a current driver’s license.

WORK SCHEDULE REQUIREMENTS: This position may require overtime on short notice and travel on short notice.
