MASH Camp Held for Incoming 7th Graders

NWTC and NWOSU Partner for MASH CAMP

Northwest Technology Center (NWTC) and Northwestern Oklahoma State University (Northwestern) partnered to offer the annual MASH (Medical Avenues in Service and Health) CAMP. The camp was held on the campuses of both Northwest Technology Center and Northwestern in Alva, May 30-June 1. Forty-three students from Northwest Oklahoma who will be entering the seventh grade learned many different skills including CPR training, first aid skills, wellness assessments, and leadership skills. The Wisdom Foundation, along with NWTC and Northwestern funded the camp.

“These middle school students received a great introduction to medical careers. They learned so much from our partners who provided tours and activities for these students.” NWTC Assistant Superintendent, Daren Slater said. “We also look forward to partnering in the future with Northwestern and the Wisdom Foundation to help students learn more about career possibilities in northwest Oklahoma.”

Participants enjoyed three days of learning and fun. Day one included the students engaging in team building and leadership exercises. The group also toured Northwestern’s Athletic Training Facility and the Nursing Simulation Lab. Day two included learning CPR, and recreating a forensic investigation in the BioMedical Sciences facilities at NWTC. The last day culminated in a tour of Share Medical Center’s emergency room, laboratory, nursing facilities, physical therapy facilities and clinic.
During their three-day stint the students were housed in the Northwestern’s dormitories and supervised by NWTC’s Daren Slater, Jennifer Shaw, Andrea Long, Tara Thomas, Melinda Barton and Tammy Mustard, along with Northwestern faculty members Dr. Bo Hannaford, Dr. Chandler Mead, Dr. Leslie Collins and Isileli Ofiu.

“I loved MASH CAMP. CPR training was my favorite part I know that if I have to use it, I will know what to do. I learned a lot about the different opportunities in the medical field.” said Ryleigh Orcutt, a seventh grader from Alva.

Students participating in the MASH Camp included: Thomas Anderson, Laura Anton, Andrew Barton, Omarion Carter, Ethan Dowty, Clyce Graves, Anna Italiano, Jaxon Jones, Huston Lane, Hunter Miller, A.J. Minjares, Ryleigh Orcutt, Alaina Pierce, Norah Scarbrough, Jocie Shelton, Alexus Sheilds, Dylan Wickham and Jaedyn Williams, all of Alva. Students from Aline-Cleo Schools included: Ashlei Cosper, Geovanni Gonzalez, Drake Johnson, Austin Littrell, Austin Ramey, Peyton Rauch, and Karli Snow. Cherokee students included: Korey Dooley, Abby Guffy, Gabriella Herrera, Jor’dyn Luster, Baylee Oister, Michelle Penoyer, Jordan Robinson, Madysen Ryel, Aiden Sanborn, Avery Sanborn, Warren Walborn and Lexi Williams. Fairview students included: Mason Boger, Taryn Brawley, Thedric Darr, Kelsie Doane, Kaden Pettus Cole Richter and Trinity Tindall.

“Northwestern is proud to be a partner in this camp with Northwest Technology Center and want to thank the Wisdom Foundation for their continued support. We wanted to provide opportunities to showcase the different types of careers in the medical field while instilling the importance of math and science related to these careers and I believe the students received that. We look forward to adding more opportunities to the camp in the future.” stated Dr. Bo Hannaford, Dean of the School of Professional Studies at Northwestern.
