Area Sixth Graders Experience Possible Career Options

Approximately 220 area sixth graders arrived at Northwest Technology Center’s Alva campus on Friday, November 18 to participate in Northwest Technology Center’s Sixth Grade Career Fair. Area schools attending included: Alva, Cherokee, Waynoka, Freedom, Medford, Burlington, Seiling and South Barber.

This event is designed to make students entering middle school begin to consider possible options for the future, the event offers a day of career exploration activities. Karen Koehn, Northwest Technology Center’s Guidance Counselor has coordinated the event for over 20 years.

“We could not put on an event like this without help from many individuals and businesses in the community,” stated Koehn. “We have been working with schools throughout northwest Oklahoma for many years to have their students exposed to career options.” Koehn is especially grateful for the NWTC/high school and adult students who helped with the fair. “Without the principals of these area high schools allowing these students to attend the entire career fair, we just could not put this together! “

The event features ten different career areas including: construction trades, automotive services, health services, business and banking, agriculture, communications, education, law enforcement and military service. The students are divided into groups guided by NWTC students and rotate from one area to the next. Students also participate in teambuilding activities provided by the NWOSU cheerleaders.
