Health Careers Certification – Alva Campus


Interested in beginning a career in healthcare or earning money while continuing your education? If so, enrolling in Health Careers is a wise choice! Healthcare careers are in high demand! Northwest Technology Center’s Health Careers Certification Program has been recognized by the Oklahoma Association of Career and Technology Educators as one of the best of its kind!

The program focuses on student goals and allows each participant to create a clearly defined plan of individual study. Each student will work with the instructor to complete a plan of study which will identify the program core and Career Pathway(s) the student will pursue. Students also participate in basic skill enhancement and activities that encourage leadership development. After successful completion of the program, students are eligible to take the appropriate state or national certification examination.

EMR Emergency Medical Responder Career Option

In this Career Option, students complete the Health Careers Core Curriculum, Medical Terminology and Anatomy and Physiology, First Aid and Healthcare Provider CPR. Additionally, they learn how to treat and assess patients in emergency medical and trauma situations, including how to treat patients in shock and those who are unconscious. The major is designed for firefighters, law enforcement personnel, industry and first response providers and it prepares students for testing and registration through the Oklahoma State Department of Health or NREMT as an EMR.

Emergency Medical Technician Career Option

First Aid and Healthcare Provider CPR is included in this career option.  Students in this major learn about airway management, how to perform patient assessment, how to respond and treat patients in common medical emergencies as well as how to manage trauma patients.  They will gain fundamental knowledge of EMS operational roles and responsibilities, including ethics, to ensure safe and effective response, scene management, and transport of patients.  Students practice in a variety of settings as chosen by the instructor.  Students must obtain EMT certification to work in this field.  This career option is based upon successful completion of all EMT competencies (didactic, psychomotor and affective domains).  This career major requires classroom, lab and clinical.

Nursing Assistant Career Option

This career option is idea for the high school students who are interested in nursing. The occupational outcome is a long term care certified nurse aide that is qualified to work in long term care facilities. This career major will also allow the completer the opportunity to gain advanced standing credit in a licensed practical nurse career major.

Phlebotomist Career Option

A Phlebotomist can participate in a variety of healthcare settings such as Medical and Diagnostic Laboratories, or General Medical and Surgical Hospitals. Responsibilities of a Phlebotomy Technician include drawing blood for tests, transfusions, donations, or research, explaining procedures to patients and assisting in the recovery of patients with adverse reactions. Phlebotomists are important members of the health care team.
