Job Shadowing

NWTC Job Shadow Day is set for Tuesday, December 10.  I have uploaded a job shadow guide to the Shared folder for Career Center on your Google Drive.  Dr. Heaton has asked me to discuss some parts of the guide with you prior to job shadow day. I will go over that with you in class today.

OkCareer Guide

Everyone should have created an account for OkCareerGuide – https://okcareerguide.kuder.com/landing-page. You should have your username and password stored in the Career Center Shared Folder in Google drive in the Accounts and Passwords sheet I created for you.  If you followed the format I requested… your username will be in the form FirstLast-nwtc and your password will be your six digit number representing the month, day and year (last two digits) of your birth date.

Somehow the morning group has missed taking three assessments in OkCareerGuide.

If you have not yet completed the following assessments within OkCareerGuide, please do so.:

  1. Kuder Career Interests Assessment: This assessment connects students top interests to career paths.  Students rate how much they would like or dislike each activity. When students are finished with the assessment, their highest interests will be matched with careers that they may enjoy. Upon completion of this assessment, a report is generated which lists five “Top Career Pathways” based on the students responses.  Students should click the “Print Report” button to create a PDF file (ask instructor for help) which will need to be saved to their Shared Google folder that the instructor has created for them.
  2. Kuder Skills Confidence Assessment: This tool assessed what students believe they are good at doing.  Students rate how confident they are that they can accomplish each activity. When they are finished, they review the skills they have and explore careers that need those skills.
  3. Super Work Values Inventory: Students rate how important work-related values are to them. When they are finished, their values will be matched with careers that they may enjoy.

Your assessment results will show you what your interests, skills and work values are and how to apply them to a career plan for your future.  I will create a PDF file of the One Page Report Summary of your results from the three assessments. I will print a copy for you and place a copy in your Career Center 2019 folder that I shared with you on Google Drive.  Place a copy of the results in your portfolio.  Also upload a copy to the My Documents section of your OkCareerGuide account. Which of the 6 Career Fields are most dominant on your results?  Which Career Clusters are most dominant on your results?

iCAP (Individual Career and Academic Planning) Documents

I have added all three of  the following documents to your Career Center Shared Folder on Google Drive.  Open the files in Google Docs to complete the forms!  As you complete each assignment, use the printer in the Career Center office to print a copy and place the printout in sheet protectors and put in your black portfolio binders.

Complete each of  the following:

iCAP Planning Document 1 – You will need to use information from your OkCareerGuide assessments and account to complete all the questions.  Please ask for help as needed when completing this assignment!

iCAP Planning Document 2 – You need to select a career that you are seriously interested in for this assignment… it may or may not be one of the careers that were available to you in the results from the assessments with OkCareerGuide.  This is where you start doing some serious thinking about what you may be interested in as a career!!  We will revisit this document throughout the year and build on this information so put some thought to it!! If you are planning on going to college this where you research to see if the degree you want or need is actually offered at the college you want to attend. I want specifics!!  In #8, just enter your goals in the Google Doc instead of entering them into OkCareerGuide! If you are not going to college…. this is where you outline your plans of how to get from the end of this year to employment in your chosen career field! If a question does not relate to your chosen career, you may put “Not needed” in the box; however….. I better not see every box with “Not needed” typed in it!

iCAP Planning Document 3 – This is where you start working on the planning, building, and/or editing a resume.  Some of you already have a resume started.  Be sure to place a copy of that resume in the Career Center Shared Folder I created for you in Google Drive.  You may even be able to copy some of the information from your resume and paste it into this document.  High school scholarship resumes differ from work resumes.  We will be discussing the differences in the future.  If you don’t have a resumes… be sure to answer all the questions in this document. If you do have a resume… be sure to place a copy in that shared folder and answer the questions.
