SUMMARY – JOURNEYMAN POWERLINE TECHNICIAN: Under general supervision, the incumbent performs all aspects of transmission line maintenance and transmission line construction. At times, the incumbent may lead a small crew assigned to a particular project.
SUMMARY – APPRENTICE POWERLINE TECHNICIAN: Under the direct supervision of the Power Line Supervisor, the Apprentice Line Technician Level I-V participates in the Line Technician apprenticeship program, performs transmission line maintenance and construction activities, and develops sound, effective and safe work habits. The Line Technician apprenticeship program requires a minimum of five years to complete. It includes extensive on-the-job training, formal training, and written study, some of which must be completed outside of work hours. Satisfactory performance and continuous progress toward completion of the program is required.
ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES – JOURNEYMAN POWERLINE TECHNICIAN include the following. Other duties may be assigned. Performs all aspects of transmission system maintenance and construction as assigned. Coordinates with load dispatchers and safely taking clearances, switching and hot line orders. Works with and near high voltages in a safe manner and at times in adverse weather conditions. Operates and maintains light and heavy equipment such as basket, digger trucks, and skid steers. Maintains vehicles, tools, equipment, and the working environment in a clear, safe and orderly condition. Follows all safe work practices, procedures, directions and instructions relating to areas of responsibility. Maintains complete, current and accurate records and reports related to areas of responsibility. Assists in training personnel in safe operating procedures to perform high voltage line maintenance. Coordinating with others in the department and other departments to ensure timely scheduling and completion of projects.

QUALIFICATIONS: To perform this job successfully, an individual must be able to perform each essential duty satisfactorily. The requirements listed below are representative of the education, experience, knowledge, skills, abilities, and behaviors required.
Education and Experience – Journeyman Powerline Technician: Requires certification as a Journeyman Line Technician by completing a qualified Line Technician apprenticeship program or the equivalent amount of progressively responsible experience. Requires extensive knowledge of our transmission system and a thorough knowledge of high voltage maintenance techniques, tools, and equipment.
Education and Experience – Apprentice Powerline Technician: Must be a High School graduate and have a minimum of one (1) year experience in two (2) or more of the following areas:
- Operation of light and/or heavy equipment such as cranes or boom trucks, digger equipment, bucket trucks, or aerial man lift devices.
- Construction, maintenance, or operation of an electrical distribution or transmission system.
- General construction or building experience as an electrician or apprentice electrician.
- Previous schools or training (including military) related to the electrical industry.
- Previous experience in any of the following categories:
- Working in climbing tools.
- Working from aerial man lift devices.
- Working at heights above 50 feet.
- Working in electrical substations.
- Working on or near high voltage AC circuits.
- Have previous experience or training with computers or digital and/or electronic equipment.
Language Skills: Ability to read and interpret documents such as safety rules, operating and maintenance instructions, and procedure manuals. Ability to write routine reports and correspondence. Ability to speak effectively with other employees.
Math Skills: Ability to add, subtract, multiply, and divide in all units of measure, using whole numbers, common fractions, and decimals. Ability to compute rate, ratio, and percent and to draw and interpret bar graphs.
Reasoning Ability: Ability to solve practical problems and deal with a variety of concrete variables in situations where only limited standardization exists. Ability to interpret a variety of instructions furnished in written, oral, diagram, or schedule form.
Computer Skills: Ability to use a personal computer to access the intranet and Microsoft Office software as required.
CERTIFICATES, LICENSES, REGISTRATIONS: Must maintain a current State of Oklahoma Class A Commercial Driver’s License (CDL) and be a qualified driver per the rules and regulations of the D.O.T. requirements. This job also requires a crane certification and Oklahoma Pesticide Applicators Certification which must be received within one (1) year of employment.
WORK SCHEDULE REQUIREMENTS: This job requires 80% overnight travel. Incumbent must live within a thirty-mile radius of specified base work location. The work schedule may include extensive unscheduled overtime, holidays, and weekends.

Requires wearing personal safety equipment including body belt, safety line and climbing hooks. Requires quick, calm action in response to emergency situations. Requires vision within normal range. Corrective lens are permitted. Requires hearing within normal range. Hearing aids are permitted. This job requires a D.O.T. physical examination.
